My name's Maggie Lacy. I have a passion for animals - especially horses which is why I am planning on majoring in Animal Science with an equine emphasis. I spend most of my time riding/training my horse, riding quads, shooting or hunting. I have one brother who is attending the University of Cincinnati for engineering. Something unique about me is that I would like to spend a year or two traveling the world and going wherever my heart desires.
Richard Hugo really strikes me as an interesting fellow and I appreciate the way he looks at poetry. He doesn't think that there is a "right" or "wrong" way to write and his teaching styles show that. One quote from the book that really stuck with me is on the very first page of this book which says, "...your important arguments are with yourself. If you don't agree with me, don't listen." I personally really appreciate the way he does not force his opinion and his ways on you. It's such a relief to see such a teaching style in the scholarly world today.
Hi Maggie! I'm so jealous! My husband goes shooting with his friends and I really want to go! I'll just have to wait until after this baby is born since it probably isn't a good thing for him to hear gunshots.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Hugo, it's so nice that he doesn't force rules for writing poetry on the readers. He gives us different things that can help us and we're allowed to choose what works for us. It's very cool how laid back he is.
I loved this quote too! I like his independent approach about writing. I like how he understands that styles differ from person to person and there is no one "right way" to write. It's a more modern way of thinking. It's the first class I've been in where they don't tell you what to do, or how to do it. I'm in a way, self teaching myself how to write poetry, and I love it.
ReplyDeleteHey Maggie, I love traveling! I don't mean to brag but I've been to some countries to Europe and I've been to Asian too. It's an awesome experience. I hope you have fun when you travel and really experience the world. I talked about this in my post too. I really like that he isn't forcing anything on us. He really wants us to find ourselves as writers. I thought that it showed how he was as a person. I truly respect him just for those first couple sentences.
